Inspirational Stars Feature – Part 5

PlaySport delivers sports coaching in Bracknell for children aged 5+.

Today’s Inspirational Sports Star goes to a man who ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a Men’s Wimbledon Champion, as well as winning Gold at the 2012 London Olympic Games… you guessed it, it’s Sir Andy Murray!!

Andy’s impressive Tennis career has seen him win a remarkable: 3 Grand Slam Titles, Back-to-Back Olympic Gold Medals (London 2012 & Rio 2016), Tour Finals in 2016, as well as numerous other tournament victories across the World.

In the height of his powers, (before some very disruptive injuries) Andy also climbed to World number 1, a feat far more impressive given he was competing in a ‘Golden Era’ against Tennis legends; Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Andy is not only an inspiration to many for his exploits on the tennis court, but has also showed incredible mental strength throughout his personal life from a very young age, as he was one of the survivors of the horrific Dunblane massacre in 1996, where 16 children and 1 teacher were tragically killed. This is something that has undoubtedly effected Andy through all aspects of his life, but due to his highly determined personality, he used his love of Tennis to come through his personal tragedy and inspire millions, Andy’s inspiration was to ‘give the town something to be proud of” which is not only heart breaking, but in a positive light, truly remarkable.

Another reason, we at PlaySport and millions around the world deem Sir Andy an inspiration, is his continued fight for woman’s rights with sports and in particular tennis. Tennis star Serena Williams has often spoken of her admiration for Andy’s continued support saying “I don’t think there’s a woman player – and there really shouldn’t be a female athlete – that is not totally supportive of Andy Murray. He has spoken up for woman’s issues and woman’s rights, especially in tennis, forever and he does it again. That’s one thing that we love about him”.

Sir Andy will always be a legend of British sport and every sporting fan is more than grateful for all of his work on and off the court! 🎾️
