We kick-off our Inspirational Stars feature with a team who inspired a generation..the 1966 Football World Cup winning squad.

Teams and individuals can inspire people in different ways – it could be a strength of character, a sense of excitement watching them play, being a supportive team mate, showing desire and effort to reach their goal, it could be anything.

Leading up to the 1966 World Cup, England may have been the hosts but they certainly weren’t the favourites, their team possessed some very good players who had success with their club team but never reached the pinnacle of football..until the summer of 1966.

Our national team had the hopes and dreams of everyone on their shoulders during the World Cup, being the host nation brings pressure and this team certainly delivered after defeating West Germany in the final. The whole squad played their part, not just the 11 who took the pitch on match-day but everyone, from the captain to the kit-man, the strength and togetherness as a TEAM ensured they had success on the pitch.

Off the pitch, the legacy this team left on English football won’t be rivaled until our next international victory and sadly, as members of this squad are no longer with us, they will never ever be forgotten in English football.

The squad included Sir Alf Ramsey (Manager), Gordon Banks, George Cohen, Ray Wilson, Nobby Stiles, Jack Charlton, Bobby Moore (Captain), Alan Ball, Jimmy Greaves, Sir Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst, John Connelly, Ron Springett, Peter Bonetti, Jimmy Armfield, Gerry Byrne, Martin Peters, Ron Flowers, Norman Hunter, Terry Paine, Ian Callaghan, Roger Hunt & George Eastham.

They were all inspirations ⚽️
